INTRODUCTION In 2014,
Bergen op Zoom and the surrounding area paid a lot of attention to 70 years of Liberation. At the request of the municipal authorities of Bergen op Zoom, an occasional committee organized a range of activities to commemorate and celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation. This committee did this in collaboration with municipalities and players from the region and the province of Zeeland. Although the organization time was barely a year very short, the committee succeeded in putting away an impressive program. Highlights were the tour with old army vehicles from Zeeland to Bergen op Zoom, the parade that connected to this tour and the international commemoration at the Canadian War Cemetery in Bergen op Zoom.
The Governor General of Canada and Prince Maurits attended this commemoration as the adjutant of His Majesty the King. In addition, there were numerous smaller activities, the impact and significance of which was usually large. The 2014 program prompted the municipal authorities of Bergen op Zoom to ask the Opportunity Committee to continue its work. This in the run-up to 75 years of Liberation in 2019-2020. The members did not have to think long about that. Almost immediately after the request of the municipal administration, the committee resumed the thread. The committee has since been transformed into a foundation and carries the name: Stichting Bevrijding Brabantse Wal. The name of the foundation indicates that the working area extends over the Brabantse Wal; the municipalities of Bergen op Zoom, Steenbergen and Woensdrecht.

The foundation maintains close contacts and cooperates with the provinces of Noord-Brabant and Zeeland and associations and organizations in the working area. KEY MESSAGE Stichting Bevrijding Brabantse Wal not only focuses on the Second World War. She also finds it important to bring lessons from the Second World War to the present. Tension in society and in the world is increasing. That is why the foundation has formulated a core message that is inspired by a statement from 2014 by the King's Commissioner in Noord-Brabant, Prof. dr. Dr. Wim van de Donk: 'freedom is a verb'. Based on this statement, SBBW uses the following core message: "Living in peace and freedom is a great good that cannot be taken for granted. Freedom requires great responsibility from every individual and peace and freedom must be constantly worked on. Everyone who lives in the Netherlands must be aware that the achievements around our freedom have demanded great sacrifices. "

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
An important document for SBBW is the 'Memorandum of Understanding'. This memorandum was signed on 27 October 2014 in Bergen op Zoom, in the presence of the Governor General of Canada and the Prince of Orange, by the ambassador of Canada, the King's commissioners in North Brabant and Zeeland and the mayor of Bergen Zoom. This document refers to the Second World War, but is mainly focused on the future. The memorandum invites the Canadian war efforts in the South West of the Netherlands to be better brought to the attention and to be remembered. In addition, the memorandum motivates to continue working on peace and freedom. This document is a guideline for SBBW to give substance to its objectives.
